Omar Moreno started with Averitt as a dock associate in 2017 and is currently a CDL-A city driver. Omar reflects on his opportunities with Averitt and why he loves the work environment.
Omar still has a relationship with his driver trainer and says, "Just last week, I called her and asked her for advice on how I should approach something." Omar stays at Averitt because it's more than a job. He loves coming in every morning and working with associates who feel like family.
When asked why people should look into the Dock to Driver program, Omar elaborates that "it never hurts to try something new." Omar says that he was nervous to take that first step, but once he had the courage to do so, it wasn't so bad. He encourages others to get involved in the Dock to Driver program because it's a great way to build a career.
Thank you for your comments, Omar! We are so glad to have you as a member of the Averitt team.
My name is Omar Moreno. I'm in the dock to driver program and I started in 2017. I always thought there was a lot of opportunity in Averitt to grow and that was a great stepping stone for me to keep growing in the company. The process of the program was fairly easy. It was really informative. The trainers ran over everything you needed to do before taking the test and they showed you a lot of skills on the road and learning proper backing is important because when making deliveries you don't know what challenges you're gonna find out there. It might be different obstacles and not every location is built for uh easy backing. I actually still have the relationship with my trainer whenever I'm out in the city, it actually just happened last week when they sent me out, I called her and asked her for a little bit of advice on how I should approach something before I went and got into something I couldn't get out of. I think it never hurts to try something new and if you ask around to some of the drivers that went through the dock driver program, they'll tell you that just like me I was nervous at one point too that's why I lasted so long on the dock and then one day I just got the courage and I went and got it and it's not so bad. It's actually a lot better now. I love Averitt because it's more than a job. I love coming in every morning. It doesn't seem like an obligation. Most of my co-workers here, they're more than co-workers, they're like family and you know whenever somebody needs something we all pitch in and help each other out and we try it as much as possible to be connected with each other. We actually hang out out of work. They know my kids, I know their kids, and they have a slogan that they say Averitt cares for kids and they actually really do because one of my sons was born with bad kidneys and I had to be out a couple of times over the years and they've never actually gave me any problems at all. I encourage people to get in the driver program because it's a great way to build a career. My kids see a red truck, they always get really happy about it. I gave them one of those toy trucks that Averitt has here and they love it. They're always saying that they want to grow up and be drivers like me one day yeah.
