What is an Intermodal Driver at Averitt?
An Intermodal Driver moves container freight that has moved via a combination of transportation modes, most often rail or ocean vessel. Our Intermodal drivers, more commonly referred to as “drayage” drivers, handle the truck portion of these moves, transporting containers between rail ramps, ocean ports, customer facilities, and Averitt locations while helping deliver efficient, reliable supply chain solutions.

What does a typical day look like for an Intermodal Driver?
A typical day for one of our Intermodal Drivers may include:
- Picking up or delivering freight containers at rail yards or ocean ports
- Transporting containers to customer locations or Averitt facilities
- Performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Communicating with dispatch and operations teams

What qualifications are needed to become an Intermodal Driver?
Qualifications may vary by location, but Intermodal Drivers typically need:
- A valid CDL-A
- A minimum of 4 months of verifiable tractor-trailer experience in the last 3 years (12 months in the last 3 years preferred)
- Hazmat and Tanker Endorsements, or be willing to obtain them
- The ability to safely lift and move freight
